Abstract
3-node higher order finite element is used in conjunction with the optimality criterion approach to obtain the minimum mass (volume if density is constant) design of a cooling fin. The results obtained from the present method agree very well with the exact solution especially near the insulated end of the fin. The effect of convective heat transfer also is studied in this paper and the present results are found to be superior to those obtained by using linearly tapered finite elements.
