Abstract
The concept of nodal averaging technique with multiple design variables per element is studied in this paper as an alternate formulation for the nodal variables as design variables using tapered finite elements in the optimality criterion approach. The optimum configuration of a cooling fin is obtained using the present concept. The results obtained with two design variables per element are as good as those obtained by the method of nodal variables as design variables and agree very well with the exact solution.
