Abstract

The isolation and stereochemistry of 3-hydroxylongifolaldehyde (4), the missing key-compound in the earlier proposed mechanism for the abnormal perbenzoic acid oxidation of longifolene is described. Rearrangement of hydroxyaldehyde (4) to hydroxyketone (6) during exposure to LAH is reported.
