Abstract
Contributions by the author extending over the last 15 years on two related topics have been reviewed: (1) Carcinogenesis by thiophene isosters of polycyclic hydrocarbons in connexion with the study of the role of the 9,10-double bond in phenanthrene (K region) and (2) Synthesis of condensed thiophenes and thiapyrans. The survey also includes a considerable amount of unpublished work.
