Abstract

An attempt is made to utilize the mossbauer effect for study of the ferroelectric-antiferromagnetic material. BiFeO3. Data obtained in the ferroelectric range above the Neel temperature (TN) indicate that iron has a trivalent configuration but the Fe-O bond is only partially ionic. TN has been determined to be 372 ± 3°C. The strong quadrupolar interaction observed indicate asymmetrically disposed Fe3+ ions in the oxygen octahedra.
