Abstract

A new class of ester-carbonate monomers was prepared by reaction of monomethylcarbonate of bisphenol-A with tere/isophthaloyl chloride. Self polycondensation of these monomers in presence of titanium tetraisopropoxide as catalyst resulted in the formation of copoly(arylester-carbonate)s having an ester to carbonate ratio of 2: 1. Copoly(arylester-carbonate)s rich in either carbonate groups were also prepared by copolymerization of ester-carbonate monomer with dimethyl terephthalate and the bismethylcarbonate of bisphenol-A. The polymer structure was established by 1H NMR and IR spectroscopy. The ordered sequence of estercarbonate groups in the polymer was established by 13C NMR spectroscopy.
