Abstract

Phase relationships in the system CdO-B2O3 were investigated by the quench method and by differential thermal analyses. A large region of liquid immiscibility extends from practically 100% B2O3 to about 46% B2O3. The compounds 2CdO·3B2O3 (44.86% B2O3), and 3CdO·2B2O3 (26.55% B2O3) both melt congruently near 1000°C and form a simple eutectic system. The compound 2CdO·B2O3 (21.33% B2O3) undergoes a rapid, reversible inversion near 900° C and melts congruently at 980°C. A large volume change attends a polymorphic transition in the compound 3CdO·B2O3 (15.31% B2O3) at 875° C and it meltsat 1020° C. The compounds and polymorphs were characterized by X-ray diffraction, optical and thermal data. Some experiments on the solid solubility of MnO in the C2B3, C3B2, and C2B1 compounds are described.
