Abstract
The x-ray k-absorption edge position and the extended structure of yttrium in several compounds have been investigated using 400-mm bent-crystal (mica) spectrograph. The absorption edge position and the extended structure for Y3+ in dilute aqueous solutions of several salts have been found to be identical indicating that Y3+ ions absorb as if they are in vacuum. The absorption edge position for the Y3+ ion in a solution has been taken as a reference with which the edge position for Y3+ ions in different compounds is compared. The shift of the absorption edge towards the lower-frequency side seems to be related to the covalency. If the near neighbors are unchanged, a change in the distant neighbors does not affect the absorption edge position appreciably.
