Abstract

The detrital accumulations of sixteen major and minor elements in the Godavari delta are determined based on their measured concentrations in the deltaic clays using atomic absorption spectrophotometry and the clay deposition rates by the 210Pb technique. Comparison of these rates (averaged for the past 300 years) with those derived for the world ocean clays reveals that Al, Fe, Mg, Ca, Ti, Co, Cr, V, Zn and Sr in the latter are mostly detrital in origin. Authigenic components for Mn, Ni, Cu, Rb, Na and K are present in the deep-sea sediments with Mn having the highest component.
