Abstract

The structural transformations in poly-L-proline as revealed by x-ray-diffraction and optical-activity studies are discussed. It is shown that the polymer can exist in many forms depending upon the solvent used and the way in which the precipitates were obtained. Only three forms were found to be important, and they are designated in this paper as I, IA, and II. The conditions under which these forms undergo interconversion are dealt with. The possible structures of the forms IA and I are also discussed.
