Abstract
Recent experimental work provided direct evidence for the existence of the species O22- and concomitantly of Cu+ in the high-Tc superconductors La1.8Sr0.2CuO4 and YBa2Cu3O7- delta . A theoretical mechanism involving these species is suggested which will lead to pairing of quasi-particles (holes or electrons). This mechanism invokes ideas of correlation super-exchange which leads to an electronic mechanism of superconductivity in the high-Tc systems.
