Abstract

151Eu Mössbauer isomer shift measurements in the dilute compounds Eu0.05Y0.95Ni2P2 and Eu0.05Y0.95Pd2 P2 suggest that Eu is strongly intermediate valent in the case of the former alloy, whereas in the latter it is 2+, like in EuNi2P2 and EuPd2P2, respectively. This proves the single-ion character of the Eu valency in these compounds.
