Abstract
Etherification of ethylene and propylene glycols with isobutylene was carried out in the presence of cation exchange resin catalysts, Amberlyst-15, Indion-130, and a homogeneous catalyst, p-toluene sulfonic acid. Kinetics of these reactions was studied in a magnetically stirred 1.0 × 10-4 m3 capacity autoclave in the temperature range 50-70°C. The maximum conversion of glycols was obtained at 60°C and 10% loading of Amberlyst-15 catalyst. Aspects of mono- and di-etherification and etherification of primary versus secondary OH groups in monopropylene glycol were studied. A pseudohomogeneous model fitted the data very well. Optimum values of the rate constants were obtained numerically. The ethers formed could be deetherified easily at 120°C with the same catalyst.
