Abstract

The field of separations using hydrotrope solutions has been reviewed. Solvent extraction and extractive distillation with aqueous solutions of hydrotropes are the new separation techniques suitable for separation of close boiling point mixtures. These methods are attractive because of very high selectivity and ease of recovery of solutes without any emulsification problem. The correlation of hydrotropic effect with octanol-water partition coefficients has been investigated, and the differences of hydrotropic solutions from micellar solutions have been examined.
