Abstract
We show that the stringent bounds placed on sin2θw from a recent analysis of measurements at LEP rule out any possibility of the survival of left-right symmetry at low energies in grand unified theories. Independent of the grand unified group (or the partial unified group) that we start with and the details of the breaking chains, the lowest mass scale, MR, to which left-right symmetry survives is ≈109−1010GeV. This scale is driven up even higher with the inclusion of the Higgs contribution to the beta functions, and also in the supersymmetric versions of these theories.
