Abstract
A new transition state (ZTS) based on intermediate atomic numbers is proposed for the calculation of isoelectronic changes in the total electronic energy in atoms in Xα theory. Numerical tests suggest that the latter, in conjunction with the proposed ZTS method, is capable of accurately describing the energy states of negative ions and core-excited atoms in general.
