Abstract

The thermodynamics of irreversible processes as developed by Onsager, De Groot and others has been applied to the case of thermal effusion of a fluid consisting of two isomers with a finite velocity of transformation. More general formulae than those of De Groot, Jansen and Mazur have been obtained, by considering the velocity of transformation to be different in the two chambers on account of the difference in temperature. Application of these results to liquid Helium II is discussed, and their importance in the study of chemical equilibria pointed out.
