Abstract
India is considered to be an intermediate area with respect to the prevalence of chronic hepatitis B virus (CHBV) infection. Although CHBV prevalence in the United States is low, a growing incidence of this condition has been reported there, especially in Asian Americans. Recent studies from India have highlighted the fact that a significant proportion of CHBV-infected patients with normal alanine amino-transferase levels have high viremia and significant histologic damage. Studies focusing on Indian Americans are lacking. This article reviews the epidemiology, natural history, and treatment of hepatitis B in India and Indian Americans.
