Abstract
We write down the action for an interacting open string field theory in the presence of an arbitrary background field describing a two-dimensional conformal field theory in the upper half-plane. Gauge invariance of the action is proved explicitly. The action reduces to the standard string field theory action proposed by Witten when the background corresponds to 26-dimensional flat space-time.
