Abstract

With their ownership split between the Government of India, respective state governments and sponsor banks in the ratio of 50%, 15% and 35%, Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) were set up from 1975 onwards as an institution that combined the local feel and familiarity with the rural problems which the co-operatives possessed and the professionalism of commercial banks with a view to reaching the rural poor more extensively2 . While the number of RRBs today stands at 43, with most states having one RRB each, between 1987 and 2005, each state had several smaller RRBs totalling 196 across the country.
