Abstract
We study the angular distribution of muons in pp→μ+μ−+anything in a model based on quantum chromodynamics proposed recently to explain the high transverse momentum of the lepton pairs. The coefficients A, B, and C, which occur in the distribution 1+Acos2θ +Bsin2θcosφ+Csin2θcos2φ in the μ+μ− center-of-mass frame, are calculated as functions of τ=m2/s (m is the μ+μ− invariant mass, √s is the hadron center-of-mass energy) and rτ=qτ/√s (qτ is the μ+μ− transverse momentum in the hadron center-of-mass frame). It is found that on integration over rτ, the distribution is not significantly different from that in the Drell-Yan model, i.e., 1+cos2θ. However, as functions of rτ, A, B, and C show striking variations, an experiment verification of which would be a test of the model.
