Abstract
The kinetics of polymerization of styrene and methyl methacrylate in solution is investigated to understand the nature and extent of influence of solvents and initiators on the various rate constants. The observed variation of A (=kt/kp2) with monomer concentration in the case of styrene is explained on the basis of a kinetic scheme including primary radical termination step. The investigation with di-tert-butyl peroxide as initiator at 70°C. in solvents, ethyl acetate and toluene, indicated that the rates of initiation are as expected on the basis of theories of reactivity of free radicals developed recently.
