Abstract
The curvature of the ground-state energy of a correlated Fermi system (with respect to variations in the mean boson field around its extremum) is related to kinetic energy fluctuations in a Fermi gas, and is thus shown to be negative. Therefore the mean-field solution is unstable, and does not seem a good first approximation for describing the properties of such systems.
