Abstract
Various kinds of defects may be present in optical fibres. These defects arise at various stages of fibre sensor development such as preform fabrication, fibre drawing and fibre laying. The defects can be due to the presence of dopants, OH ions, residual stresses and micro cracks developed at different stages of fibre fabrication. We present a case study on observation of a defect, which is dormant at ambient temperature and manifests its presence at higher temperature. In this paper, we bring out the details of detection of this defect in a 62.5 μm/125 μm polyamide coated fibre using a Raman scattering-based distributed temperature sensor.
