Abstract

Using spectroscopically pure anatase, the transition to rutile was investigated by means of X-ray spectra. Below 610°C the transition is immeasurably slow; above 730°C it occurs extremely rapidly. The conversion is second-order with respect to remaining anatase, and is characterized by an activation energy of ca. 100 Kcal/mole. A formal interpretation of these results is provided in terms of a model set forth by Avrami.
