Abstract
Diagrammatic valence bond theory is extended to obtain dynamic non-linear susceptibilities of finite Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) or other quantum cell models whose correlated ground state |G > is known. Sums over excited states in the dipole approximation are avoided by directly solving inhomogeneous linear equations for corrections to |G>. Exact χ(3) coefficients are found for third-harmonic generation in polyenes with six or fewer double bonds.
