Abstract
Crosslinking copolymerization of styrene with divinylbenzene, butanediol dimethacrylate and ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate in the presence of benzil in the dissolved state results in benzil-encapsulated crosslinked polymers. Resins with various crosslink densities were prepared by adjusting the monomer/crosslinker ratio. The benzil entrapped in the cavities was subjected to benzil-benzilic acid rearrangement. The precursor resins and the rearrangement products were characterized by IR and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The surface properties of polystyrene and benzil-encapsulated polystyrene were compared by scanning electron micrography.
