Abstract

A chemical examination of an unknown. Pterocarpus wood received from Tirupathi, Devatsam, showed its similarity to Pterocarpus marsupium. Evidence has been adduced to show that pterostilberne, which is the most characteristic component of the genus Pterocarpus, may only be a contributing factor to the durability of their heartwoods. Despite long age-weathering, the unknown specimen had remarkably well retained the constituents responsible for the durability of the timber.
