Abstract

The sensitivity of Tetrahymena pyriformis to irradiated normal media has been examined during four successive transfers. Morphological, physiological as well as chemical characteristics of the cells with respect to growth, size, shape, response to heat-shock synchronization, oxidative metabolism, and the contents of certain cell constituents were not affected. Hydrogen peroxide formed in the medium due to radiolysis is decomposed rapidly by Tetrahymena. This may explain the resistance of cells to known toxic effects of irradiated media.
