Abstract
Although a large variety of effective interactions have been proposed for the study of nuclear properties of s-d and p-f shell nuclei, there exists little understanding of their characteristic but distinguishing features. We present here a systematic comparative study of these interactions by quantitatively analysing their quadrupole and pairing properties. An empirical interaction, expressed as a linear combination of these two operators, has been generated for each interaction using the spectral distribution methods of French, such that (i) it has a maximum correlation with that effective interaction and (ii) has also the same spectral width, in scalar and scalar-T spaces. Low-lying states given by the empirical interaction and the corresponding effective interaction have been compared for 20Ne by doing shell-model calculations. The calculations clearly show that the effective interactions differ substantially in their pairing character and that the effective pairing strength of the interactions changes considerably with the number of particles and isospin.
