Abstract

The formation of hypoxanthine from guanine in extracts of rat liver has been observed and its mechanism investigated. Evidence is presented indicating that the reduction occurs at the free base level, the pathway involving deamination to xanthine, reduction by DPNH and xanthine oxidase to hypoxanthine, and stabilization at the hypoxanthine oxidation level by conversion to inosinc in the presence of nucleoside phosphorylase. This pathway was confirmed in a model system with pure enzymes, DPNH, and a source of ribose 1-phosphate.
