Abstract
A lattice dynamical model based on a potential function is used to obtain the phonon dispersion relations in various phases of KNbO3. It is observed that the soft mode in each of the cubic, tetragonal and orthorhombic phases could be simulated by proper choice of a crucial parameter in the short-range part of the potential function. The calculated phonon dispersion relations agree reasonably well with the available experimental data from neutron scattering in the various phases.
