Abstract

The photo-elastic constants of diamonds have been redetermined and are found to be q₁₁=-5·0₅, q₁₂=+2·1₅, q₄₄=-2·8×10^-14 cm.² dyne^-1 and p₁₁=-0·31, p₁₂=+0·09, p₄₄=-0·12. These lead to a decrease in refractive index when diamond is subjected to a hydrostatic pressure.
