Abstract

The threshold fluences for combustion (at lambda =10.6 mu m) of cellulose nitrate are shown to be at least an order of magnitude greater than those for the volatile decomposition. It makes processing of this plastic feasible in air using a laser. Optimum processing parameters for a CW CO2 laser are reported.
