Abstract

Many octahedral faces of synthetic diamonds manufactured by De Beers of Johannesburg have been examined optically. Spirals have been observed for the first time on (111) faces of one crystal. They are of hexagonal shape. From the nature of the spiral it is conjectured that the spiral belongs to the diamond and not to any foreign overgrowth. The spirals are of various types and sizes and have been examined with a phase contrast microscope.
