Abstract
Etch pits of hexagonal shapes with their sides parallel to <112̅> directions have been observed by etching the (111) cleavage surface of barium fluoride in oxalic acid solution with water. By changing either the concentration or the temperature of the etchant, pits having their sides parallel to <110> directions have been produced. Thus the orientation of the pits has been rotated through 30°. The rotation in the orientation of the pits has been conjectured due to different activation energies along the two steps, i.e. in <112̅> and <110> directions, on the (111) surface of barium fluoride.
