Abstract
By heating KBr and KI cleavages side by side on a platinum lid in a muffle furnace at 660°C, rectangular whiskers bounded by (001) faces and having secondary and tertiary branching are found to grow on KBr cleavages. The whiskers grown on matched faces have a one-to-one correspondence. The dislocation density in these whiskers is found to be very low, of the order of 104/cm2. The lattice constant of these whiskers has been found to be 0.14 Å, greater than that of the parent crystal. This is attributed to the diffusion of KI in the lattice of KBr. The implications are discussed.
