Abstract

The strain εst necessary to obtain a given microstructure was investigated as a function of the test temperature for high strength low alloy (HSLA), EN8 and 0.83% C steels as well as for electrical grade aluminium, in the hot-working range of temperatures. For two steels (HSLA and EN8) the investigations were also extended to the two-phase region. εst increased exponentially with temperature and the rate-controlling step for deformation had an activation energy similar to that for volume diffusion. The implications of our results to the problems of rolling-forging are also discussed.
