Abstract
It is suggested that the observed universality of the transverse momentum squared distribution for the meson resonances η, ρ, ω, ƒ and K* in soft hadron-hadron interactions arises because they are dominantly produced as a result of quark-antiquark fusion (recombination). The universal value of the slope parameter is then interpreted as due to the intrinsic transverse momentum (kT) of the quarks which yields the values <kT>q=0.36±0.01 GeV/c and <k2T>q=0.16±0.01 (GeV/c).
