Abstract
A study of the complexation reactions of aluminium with catechol has been carried out by potentiometric, conductometric methods and the correctness of the assumed formation of 1:1, 1:2 and 1:3 complexes has been further confirmed by preparative studies during the course of which a number of new complex salts have been isolated. In acidic solution the formation of the mono-catecholate derivative only was indicated even in the presence of a large excess of catechol. The equilibrium constant K of the reaction: Al3 + C6H4(OH)2 ⇔Al(C6H4O2)+ +2H+ and the logarithm of the formation constant (K1) of the complex ion, [Al(C6H4O2)]+ were found to be 9.33 · 10-7 and 16.24 respectively. The logarithms of the formation constants (log Kn) for 1:1, 1:2 and 1:3 complexes have also been determined by alternative methods to be 16.56, 15.64 and 13.65.
