Abstract

Magnetic susceptibilities of a number of hydrates have been measured by the Gouy technique. In several hydrates of the same salt it has been found that the deviation in the observed molecular susceptibility from additivity, per molecule of water of crystallization, is greatest in the hydrate containing the least number of molecules of water of crystallization and tends to decrease as the number of molecules of water of hydration increases. A relation has been shown to exist between the heat of hydration per molecule of water of crystallization and the deviation in Χm per molecule, in these hydrates. The departure from the additivity rule in hydrates has been explained on the basis of bindings between the molecules of water of crystallization and the anhydrous salt.
