Abstract
The X-ray line broadening studies on cold-worked uranium for various amounts of deformation have been carried out. The necessity of obtaining the second-order reflections for separating the particle size effect from the lattice distortion has been eliminated by disregarding the dimensional distribution of particle sizes. Fourier analyses of (111), (112) and (131) reflections show that fragmentation ceases after a certain deformation and strain reaches a saturation value. The stress has been found to be more isotropic. The elastic strain energies for various deformations have been calculated and it is seen that for large deformations a negligible amount of deformation energy goes into distorting the crystal lattice.
