Abstract

The determination of chromosome number in human somatic tissues has been the cause of controversy from time to time. Recently, Timonen made an extensive study on the variations of the chromosome number in the human endometrium in the proliferative stage. From a study of one thousand nuclei, he finds that the highest frequency distribution is between 21 and 25 chromosomes. This result has been criticized by Sachs; the number obtained by him from the same tissue of human beings and from other mammals corresponds to the diploid number of the particular species concerned.
