Abstract

Cycloheximide (CHI) inhibited germination, tube growth and gamete formation in pollen cultures of Trigonella foenum-graecum at 1-200 μg/ml. The extent of recovery of these processes when the pollen cultures were transferred to CHI-free medium depended on the concentration of CHI and duration of treatment. Gamete formation was inhibited even when pollen grains were cultured on CHI-free medium for 2 h and then transferred to CHI medium. It is inferred that CHI inhibits gamete formation by blocking the synthesis of proteins that constitute kinetochore fibres, thus preventing the separation of sister chromatids.
