Abstract
It is possible for a plasma containing finite-amplitude ion-density fluctuations and drifting electrons to exhibit a negative resistance for high-frequency electric fields. Under such circumstances both longitudinal plasma oscillations and electromagnetic waves can be amplified or even undergo unstable growth. We have investigated this possibility for longitudinal waves by theoretical analysis and numerical simulation of a one-dimensional plasma model. Substantial growth rates and saturation levels are found.
