Abstract

The compound EuBa2Cu3O7-y has been stabilized in the orthorhombic structure by slow cooling and in the tetragonal structure by quenching from high temperatures. These two structures differ in the number of oxygen atoms per unit cell and their ordering. The orthorhombic form of this compound is superconducting with a mid-point Tc =87K. In contrast, superconductivity is suppressed in the tetragonal form prepared by quenching. From 151Eu Mossbauer studies, Eu is found to be in a trivalent state in both of them. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show a slight increase in the susceptibility of the tetragonal form relative to that of the orthorhombic form. This may be due to the changes in the magnetic moment on copper.
