Abstract
The performance and design of an impact damper for controlling the vibration of a van der Pol oscillator are discussed. Both autonomous and harmonically excited systems are analyzed. The method of equivalent linearization is extended to obtain the analytical solution, which is verified by numerical integration. An empirical relationship is established for the optimum design of the damper for controlling the forced oscillation. A sensitivity analysis for this optimum design is also reported.
