Abstract

The problem of finding all modular sets of characters for rational conformal field theories is reduced to the problem of solving certain diophantine equations. We discuss, with several examples, how the primary field content, the fusion rules, the correlation functions and the chiral algebra of a rational conformal field theory can be reconstructed starting from the differential equation for its characters.
