Abstract
The activity of single neuronal units located in the different regions of the hypothalamus, limbic system, and certain other brain regions was recorded in adult and sexually immature female monkeys, and their responses to vaginal stimulation were observed. Sexually immature monkeys were also given injections of oestrogen and the observations repeated. Inhibitory responses to genital stimulation were mostly observed in the rostral hypothalamic regions, as well as in some units located in the amygdala and septal region. In immature monkeys such inhibitory responses were obtained only after administration of hormone. Excitatory responses were mostly obtained from other areas of the hypothalamus and limbic system. Even in the rostral hypothalamus excitatory responses were produced in immature animals, which were converted into inhibitory effects after hormonal priming.
