Abstract
It is shown that the total angular momentum of a Kemmer particle can be split up into orbital and spin parts which are individually conserved and covariant, using the recent approach of Hilgevoord and Wouthuysen in the case of Dirac particles. The spin operator obtained from the space-space part of this spin tensor is compared with another (non-covariant) "observable" spin operator derived by the authors from a canonical formalism.
